I took my first college class when our youngest daughter headed out of state to go to college.  Years later, while I was doing my practicum to get my Bachelors in Social Work, my boss asked me to teach parenting classes.  I taught classes for several months, however, very few parents attended.  I told my boss that over the summer, before beginning my masters degree, that I was going to go home and turn my parenting classes into a parenting book.  I said, "Let me know if and when I can get into the homes to be able to work with the whole family.  I knew that was crucial.  Just as I was finishing up my Masters Degree, I got a call from my previous boss who said that the local judge was court ordering parents of children on probation to take parenting classes.  She said, "You're the first one I thought of!"  I said,  "I'm in!" 

I was thrilled because parenting is my passion and always     has been. I consider the book "Hooked" to be one of the most important books I have ever read, then and now.  I have no  clue how I found this book, however, when I read it, I knew every parent needed to have this crucial, although scary, life changing information which could help families stay together.

One experience - After explaining this eye opening information to the class, a young woman, placed both hands over her face as she sobbed.  After she calmed down, I asked her, "Are you okay?"                                                                              Her reply was, "Now, I know what's wrong with me!"  

The room was silent and I let it sink in a bit.  I asked the group,  "Do you believe this  is important information that you need to know to help protect your children?"  Every person in the room nodded yes.  Understanding this piece of information is crucial to teach your children, the earlier is better than later. 

At what point do couples need to say, "For the sake of our children, we need to work harder on our marriage.  It is a choice and this choice will effect our children for the rest of their lives.  Let's make this work."   What does it take?   Patience - compromise - The Golden Rule is great to teach your family! "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you! "         Simple enough!

When I was a kid,  pornography wasn't considered a big deal. We knew teen-age boys likely had a couple of "girly" magazines under their mattress.  Sadly, I think many parents thought, that is just what many teenage boys do! Well, things have certainly escalated since then and pornography has become a huge industry which creates an extremely dangerous problem.  We are learning more and more about it's addictive nature.  

 No surprise, due to the internet and phones which have the availability of pornography popping up at any given time. This is extremely dangerous!  Unfortunately, I believe there are too many parents who are not​ ​aware of the possibility of very harmful, life changing, behaviors that pornography can cause.  Like any addiction, the more they have, in this case "see",  the more they want!!!

​Parents, this is crucial information so you can warn your children,                                                                           like other addictions, the more you see, the more you want!

 A thought can become an action and an action can become a behavior and then a behavior can become a habit, which eventually becomes an addiction!  It's that easy!  Too often, it is an unknown danger,  and many do not understand how looking at pornography affects the brain! 

​The effect on the brain is the reason it becomes so scary .  When  people need more perverse behavior. Too often, sex with an adult is not exciting enough and that is how children become sexually molested and the eventual sex trafficking of our children.

Pornographic pictures are the same as taking that first drink of alcohol. The biggest difference is that people can choose to never take that first drink. If a person NEVER takes a first drink it is impossible to be an alcoholic. However, it is not easy to avoid pornography simply because a form of it can walk down the street!  It takes strength for men and woman to look away quickly!  INTEGRITY  is a wonderful character trait to have the discipline to look away quickly!!! 

​If you haven't already, please look into blocking televisions and computers. Unfortunately,  there are so many smart phones out their, even if your child doesn't have one,  their friends likely do! It is practically impossible for your children to not see some form of pornography.   Even when I search "free images" on Google, inappropriate or even seductive pictures occasionally pop up, even if they have nothing to do with the search term!  Sadly, due to children's natural curiosity, it takes a lot of strength  not to look.   We must teach the consequences and risks of pornography to our children!   

Therefore, in my opinion, the only way to truly protect your children is to help them understand the dire consequences of looking at pornography.  It is a very serious subject with very tragic consequences! Just one of the more dire consequences is the inability to bond!   (Again, "Hooked..." is a crucial book to read.)

I have had the movie below on this website for quite a long time.  This movie has recently (summer of 2023) come out all over the country and hopefully the whole world!   I have never cried more at a movie than I did this one and I still tear up just thinking about this horrific evil!      I also have never felt more sickened, appalled and angry than I did seeing this movie!  
The sex trafficking of anyone, let alone our precious children, is pure evil.  Parents, our homes MUST be a refuge from this evil. PLEASE BE STRONG PARENTS BY PROTECTING AND TEACHING YOUR CHILDREN THE RISKS IN OUR WORLD, so often due to evil pornography!  ​

      This video opens the door to have a great conversation with your children.  Parents, it may feel awkward, however,                       it will feel way more awkward and frankly, painful to sit down and talk with your children after they have some kind  of pornography or sexual addiction or heaven forbit, been molested.  These addictions can have  horrific consequences! Be a strong  parent by teaching them how to deal with the extremely difficult problems  in our society today! Please protect your children from pornography!

I find it very scary indeed that every time I check my email or go on to watch a video on YouTube there are a mirage of suggested side tracks that can lead one to places they don't want to or shouldn't go. I feel we are in a very challenging time and we need to teach our children of the dangers that lurk around the corner with out being so uptight that we create the curiosity that will drive them to see what we are so concerned about. Teach them with love and correct principles and they will grow strong... Rick

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. One of the scariest statistics I have run across is that 75% of adults don't believe pornography is a problem! I I believe THAT alone is a huge problem! That is exactly why I knew I needed to write this article. Thank you Rick, for not being one of those 75% parents. The more I read concerning pornography and sexual addictions, the more terrified I become for families. It is a horrific addiction that leads to the destruction of many families.   The bigger picture is to understand and teach our children the damage that can occur when having too many sexual partners.   Remember, this is crucial to teach our children when they are fairly young concerning the many behaviors that can cause addictions.  Thanks for sharing your thoughts Rick!     Jane E.
