SHAPING THE CHILD...BECAUSE PARENTING IS NOT FOR WIMPS!
November 2016 - third week
I love this time of year... when I can hear geese honking above me in V formation as they head south for the winter.
Lesson 1 - Enthusiasm
People who share a common direction and sense of common purpose can get where they are going more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the thrust of other members of the family. Translation from geese to parenting – When family members are aware of their uniqueness as individuals they can contribute even more by working together enthusiastically, therefore, strengthening the whole family. |
When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into the formation, and another goose flies point at the head. The geese in formation honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.
She continues, "When a goose flies out of formation, it suddenly feels that drag and resistance of trying to go it alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. Finally, and this is important, when a goose gets sick or wounded and falls out of formation, two other geese will fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection. They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or it dies, and only then do they launch out on their own, or with another formation to catch up with their flock. |
Lesson 2 - Cooperation
It is harder to do something alone than together. It is sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs.
Translation from geese to parenting
When the family helps and supports each other they can benefit especially by learning they can do difficult things.
Lesson 3: Consideration
Shared leadership and interdependence gives each of us a chance to lead as well as opportunities to rest.
Translation from geese to parenting
When parents teach children to be considerate, respectful, and kind, they will have what it takes to be great leaders.

Lesson 4: Encouragement
What do we say when we honk from behind? We need to make sure our honking is encouraging and not discouraging.
Translation from geese to parenting
When parents show by example encouragement, kindness and praise, it may just set the example for their children's attitude for life.

Lesson 5: Support
If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by our colleagues and each other in difficult times as well as in good. Translation from geese to parenting
Children want and need to have the support, encouragement and love from parents which mean everything to them.
